Kneipp medicine in focus

When people hear the word “Kneipp,” they often think immediately of cold-water applications. Water therapy is indeed an important part of Kneipp treatments, but Kneipp medicine goes far beyond “just” water. It is a holistic concept that covers many areas – and at Marienkron, we live and work by these principles. We asked our Medical Director, Dr. Göschl, to explain how Kneipp medicine is structured and what it includes.

Kneipp medicine – a holistic concept

Around 200 years ago, Bavarian priest Sebastian Kneipp developed Kneipp medicine. He successfully treated himself with water applications and documented his insights in the book “My Water Cure.” To this day, this work remains a fundamental reference for Kneipp medicine, which is built on five pillars. All of our health programs at Marienkron are based on these five pillars, though each program emphasizes them differently.

1. Pillar: Life balance (mental regeneration)

One of the five pillars of Kneipp medicine is life balance. Body, mind, and soul should be in harmony. Mental health is just as important as physical health. If the psyche is not in good shape, the body usually suffers too. At Marienkron, we offer a variety of relaxation and meditation programs. Through these impulses – along with the tranquility of the health resort and the regular rhythm of the day – mindfulness is strengthened and resilience is built.

2. Pillar: Water

The healing power of Kneipp water therapy strengthens the immune system and supports a healthier life. Guests at Marienkron not only receive excellent therapeutic guidance but also practical knowledge on how to integrate Kneipp treatments at home. While our health resort offers a much broader range of Kneipp applications than one could do at home, many small practices can be continued in everyday life.

3. Pillar: Exercise

Regular exercise, ideally outdoors, has a positive effect on circulation, the immune system, metabolism, and of course the muscles. Exercise is an essential factor for a healthy lifestyle. At Marienkron, movement plays an important role in all of our programs – whether it’s a walk through the resort park or a bike ride. Exercise is inseparable from both Kneipp medicine and Marienkron.

4. Pillar: Nutrition

Nutrition is a very important pillar at Marienkron and is considered a therapy in its own right. Healthy, balanced eating and conscious calorie reduction – such as fasting – are fundamental elements of our health concept. At Marienkron, meals are predominantly plant-based, as recommended in Kneipp medicine. Our kitchen uses not only fresh and regional ingredients but also a wide variety of herbs – which leads directly to the last pillar of Kneipp medicine.

5. Pillar: Herbs

Herbs have well-documented health benefits and are used in many forms in Kneipp medicine. At Marienkron, too, herbs are essential: herbal compresses, teas, herbal baths, and of course meals refined with herbs are part of daily life. Our kitchen uses fresh herbs from our own garden, and our teas are provided by our partner, Kräuterhaus Kottas.

These five pillars not only support a long and healthy life, but also contribute significantly to well-being and gut health. That is why the five pillars of Kneipp medicine form the foundation of our health concept. Because health begins in the gut. And at Marienkron.
